Xian Ancient City Wall is the most complete city wall that has survived in China, as well being one of the largest ancient military defensive systems in the world. The City Wall was built by Zhu Yuanzhang in the Ming dynasty, with a history of more than 600 years, for storing abundant food supplies and defend against the enemy. Initially, the materials of the Wall was layers of dirt, lime and glutinous rice extract, and now is bricks.

After several times extension, the Wall nowadays stands 12 meters tall, 12-14 meters wide at the top and 15-18 meters thick at the bottom. The wall is circle which covers 13.9 kilometers in length with a deep moat surrounding it. The Wall has four main gates and they are respectively name as Changle (meaning eternal joy) in the east, Anding (harmony peace) in west, Yongning (eternal peace) in the south and Anyuan (forever harmony) in the north. It also features a series of watchtowers, turrets, crenels and gate towers.

Xian Ancient City Wall is located at the center of downtown. It is very convenient to visit there. The main route encircling the Wall are respectively Huancheng East Road, Huancheng West Road, Huancheng North Road and Huancheng South Road. On the northern side, there are two train stations: Xian Train Station and Xian West Train Station. There are the most popular attractions near the Southern Gate: the Bell Tower, Big Wild Goose Pagoda and the Forest of Stone Steles Museum.

Three Ways to Visit Xian Ancient City Wall

Since the City Wall was open to the public, visitors can choose three ways to visit: by biking, by walking and by sightseeing battery car.


Biking on the Wall is the most popular ways to visit it. Try do on the Wall and you will have an enjoyable and interesting experience. If you just cycle on the wall at a medium speed, 1.5 to 2 hours are OK. But some interesting performance will attract your eyes, making you have to stop there for watching.

After ascending the Wall, there are the place for bike rental. Usually, the bike deposit is 200 yuan. The single bike costs 45 yuan/ 100 minutes. The tandem bike cost 80 yuan/ 100 minutes. If the time of biking is more than 100 minutes, you need to pay an extra charge ( 10 minutes costs 5 yuan for the single bike and 10 yuan for the tandem bike) .

Biking Itinerary: You can choose any one of the gates and then biking. If you do not return the bike at the other gates before 17:30, you need return it to the South Gate before 20:00.


Walking is also OK on the Wall. For walking, you will have enough time to visit every site on the Wall and do not worry about returning the bike. The sites include Archery Tower, Barbican ( literally “urn city” in Chinese ), Sluice Tower, Main Tower, Corner Tower, Watchtowers, Crenels and Parapet Wall.

Price: The ordinary car costs 80 yuan per person for a circle ride and 20 yuan per person for a section between two stops. The luxurious one costs 120 yuan per person for a circle ride and 30 yuan per person for a section between two stops.
