I’m always asked by these questions by my friends who will take a visit to Beijing and China. In this thread, I will give you guys a clue about the prons and cons of taking a group tour, so that you can plan your Beijing trip much more easily.
Group Tour Pros
- Group tours are a great way to see the highlights of Beijing without overdoing it. You won’t have time to get bored of a sight because the tour guide will be whisking you off to the next place.
- With a guide, you’ll get great historical background and interesting anecdotes about the location from a guide who speaks your language.
- If you’re on your own (or with a spouse who is doing business), group tours are an easy way to meet people.
Group Tour Cons
- Between each historic spot on the agenda is usually an unannounced stop at a shopping location – usually overpriced and unwelcome if you’re really into seeing the historic attractions.
- You won’t get to linger as part of a group. If you’re really struck by a certain statue or ancient tree, you won’t have time to sit and ponder it, you’ll need to stick with your group.
- Lunch is always part of the day and it’s generally bad Westernized-Chinese food. Take some snacks along.
In my opinion, you may be a very independent traveler, but you should book a few tours when visiting Beijing for the first time. There are pros and cons to this approach, but it’s a great way to sight-see and glean the history out of a place where the guidebooks leave you short.
You can book a Beijing tours directly from a Beijing local travel agency, and then a TA (travel advisor) will contact you and almost tailor make a tour according to your standards and to your needs. In this way, you will put all of your worries aside.
