The Forbidden City Opened Four New Areas to the Public
The Forbidden City opened four new areas of the museum to the public for the first time for the 90th anniversary of the museum’s founding.
During the past years, visitors could mainly see the “three main hall” of the Forbidden City. Actually it is only a small part of the huge palace. After the four new areas opened, the opening area increased from 52% to 65%. And the target for the next year is for 76% of the Forbidden City to be opened with more displays.
The Cining Palace
The Cining Palace located in the western part of the Palace Museum was used to be home to emperors’ mothers. And its name ‘Cining (慈宁)’ means compassion and tranquility. The newly opened parts of the Cining Palace include a private garden, a hall for worshipping the Buddha, and a residence built for Emperor Qianlong’s mother, called the Shoukang Palce.
The Baoyun Building
Located in the Palace of Xinhua door, the Baoyun building is the only building compared with Chinese and Western architectural styles together. It is a warehouse built in 1914 to store thousands of treasures.
Wings of the Meridian Gate and East Prosperity Gate
The next two new areas opened to the public is the wings of the Meridian Gate and East Prosperity Gate. Visitors can wall along the city walls, and climb the tower Donghuamen overlooking the Forbidden City for the first time after the wings of the Meridian Gate and East Prosperity Gate opened.
