2. Check Beijing Weather Forecast Before You Go

Do not go to the Mutianyu Great Wall in a bad weather: smoggy, heavy rain, thunderstorm, which will bring you bad mood. Therefore, you have to pay attention to the Beijing weather forecast one day in advance.

3. Two Ways Get to Mutianyu Great Wall

A. by taxi

Taking a taxi to Mutianyu is the most convenient, especially when you travel with little kids or seniors. The taxi fee will be about ¥350 to ¥500, for a round journey transfer plus fee of waiting time, which depends on your bargaining.

B. by public bus

Tourist Bus No.867 will take you directly to Mutianyu Great Wall. It starts from Dongzhimen Public Transport Hub to Mutainyu Stop, and passes 45 stops.

Only two buses each day at valid time: start at 7:00am and 8:30pm; return at 2:00am and 4:00pm ( from Mar.26 to Nov. 15)

Bus No.916 Express: from Dongzhimen Public Transport Hub to Huairou Beidajie Stop in Huairou District. Then you change for the local bus No.916 ( Huairou – Dongtai ) and get off at Mutianyu Stop.
Notes: The cost is $2 in 10 kilometers, and another $2 for additional 5km.

4. Three Ways up to ( down from ) Mutianyu Great Wall

A. walking up

After you arrived at the Visitor’s Center, you could walk to North Entrance and hike to the No.8 or No.10 watchtower, or to South Entrance and hike to No.6 or No.8 watchtower.

The hiking time might be more than 25 minutes and then you could see the wall, so you need to have strong legs and sports shoes.

B. taking a cable car

After you started at the Visitor’s Center, you walked towards north and arrived at the Cable Station. Then take a cable car up to the platform below the No.14 watchtower.

C. taking a chairlift or slide

The Speed Slideway is next to the South Entrance. You can take the chairlift up to the platform below the No.6 watchtower.

Taking the slide down is one of the most interesting things to visit the Great Wall. Most visitors love to slide down.

5. Avoid Travel Scams

Whether you are on the ways up to the Wall or take a slideway down from the Wall, the hawkers are very aggressive to attract you. In order to avoid being cheated, you just ignore it.

For example:
a. someone who claims that he or she works in the “National Travel Service Center” may be a fraud. They often cheat you that they will offer you the cheapest tours visiting Beijing popular sights, such as the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and so on.

b. when you take a slideway down from No.6 watchtower, someone may have taken a picture of you and asks you to pay for it at an unfair price. You can ignore it.

c. when you take a taxi or take a public bus to Mutianyu, you should get the details of your arrival place and the fees from the drive in advance, otherwise they will let you off at the wrong place.

6. Prepare for Your Great Wall Trip

a. cap, sun-glasses, sun screen, sneakers, snacks, water, etc.
b. Using toilet at the “Visitors’ Center”, because there is no toilet on the Great Wall.
c. Taking camera for the beautiful scenery. Try your best not to use the hawkers’ camera.
d. Bring a garbage bag and taking away all your rubbish.
